Acciaierie d’Italia starts up 3rd MEROS Off-gas Cleaning Plant

With seven plants ordered, three MEROS plants at Acciaierie d’Italia’s steel plant in Taranto, Italy, are now in operation. The MEROS plants in Taranto will treat the off-gas from agglomeration plants—i.e., sinter plants—and power plants. The three plants in operation now handle gas cleaning at the agglomeration plants.

Three MEROS plants from Primetals Technologies have been implemented at Acciaierie d’Italia’s site in Taranto.

We are very satisfied with the performance of the three implemented MEROS plants. In terms of sustainability, MEROS is a key technology for us, and we look forward to completing the program with the further four MEROS plants.”

Exceptional Performance

MEROS is an off-gas cleaning technology that removes nearly all potentially harmful substances in waste gas from sinter plants. In Taranto, MEROS will also be applied to power plant off-gas, managing the desulfurization, denitrification, and dust removal. The three MEROS plants reduce dust emissions from the two sinter plants to less than 3 milligrams per cubic meter—significantly below the required 10 milligrams per cubic meter. In addition, the dioxin levels are less than 0.01 nanograms per cubic meter, far below the level of 0.15 nanograms required by law.

Thanks to our highly efficient MEROS technology, the air quality in Taranto has improved immensely. It is an important project that reflects both the profound positive impact this technology is having on the environment, as well as our long-lasting and strong partnership with Acciaierie d’Italia.”

Energy Efficiency

During the MEROS process, off-gas from the sinter plant is treated in a series of steps in which the sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, dust, dioxins, furans, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, heavy metals, and various other harmful organic components are removed. By applying a high amount of recirculation, the dust is minimized, and with low pressure and frequency of the pulse cleaning cycles, MEROS is a highly energy-efficient plant.

Acciaierie d’Italia is a joint venture of ArcelorMittal and the Italian National Agency for Investments Attraction and Business Development, S.p.A. – Invitalia, with around 10,000 employees and an annual production of approximately four million tons of steel in 2021.

MEROS is a registered trademark of Primetals Technologies, Ltd. in certain countries.
