FAC Granted by Hongtai Steel for EAF Quantum in China

Hongtai Steel granted the final acceptance certificate for an EAF Quantum from Primetals Technologies for their site close to Xuancheng, Anhui province, China. Langxi County Hongtai Steel, founded in 2002, manufactures a wide array of steel-production components, including bushings and rolling mill rolls, and produces construction steel, for example, rebar, coiled rebar, wire rod, and more. The Anhui province is in the eastern part of China.

From Contract to Record-Breaking

Hongtai Steel contracted Primetals Technologies in 2018. The contract included a 120-ton EAF Quantum, a 120-ton twin ladle furnace, and Level 1 and 2 automation systems for the EAF and the twin ladle furnace, as well as all basic engineering and essential equipment for a dedusting system. The electric steelmaking plant produced its first heat early in 2022 and has since achieved record-breaking heats consistently. Power consumption was below 300 kilowatts hours per ton with a power-on time of about 30 minutes. Oxygen consumption was also minimal, at less than 23 cubic meters per ton. In summary, the EAF Quantum’s performance exceeded Hongtai Steel’s expectations.

Innovation for Performance

The excellent performance of the EAF Quantum is thanks to several notable features, including its innovative scrap preheating system that shortens the power-on times. In conventional electric arc furnaces, scrap is charged at room temperature. Using off-gas from the melting process, the EAF Quantum preheats the scrap, requiring less energy when charged, resulting in lower operational expenditures and reduced CO2 emissions. Additionally, this furnace is fully automated, also featuring advanced dust removal systems. As a result, dust emissions are reduced by 50 percent compared to standard electric arc furnaces.
